Our Herstory

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, an international service organization, was founded on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. From humble beginnings of nine members, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is now comprised of more than 325,000 initiated members in graduate and undergraduate chapters located in 12 countries including the United State. Alpha Kappa Alpha is empowered by a commitment to servant leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope. Being at the forefront of social activism is a primary duty of the sorority’s illustrious legacy propelling the membership onto the global stage and implementing an array of program to educate and empower communities.

Locally, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Alpha Beta Beta Omega Chapter was chartered on December 5, 2021, in Canton, Ohio. The chartering was historic as Alpha Beta Beta Omega is the first four-letter chapter chartered in the Great Lakes Region. Embarking on its first year, Alpha Beta Beta Omega has served the Canton/Stark County community by providing enriching cultural, educational, and social activities that uplift and preserve the unity of family; and enhance the quality of life in our community through organizational partnerships and Sorority programs. As the needs and directions of our community evolve, Alpha Beta Beta Omega stands firm and dedicated to providing “Service for All Mankind.”

The charter members of Alpha Beta Beta Omega are: LaLisa Anthony, Eileen Arrington, Tamara Lewis-Baranyai, Joy Ellis, Michelle Ellis, Suzanne Evans, Patricia Hill, Joan Jenkins, Jeannette Jones, Audra Martin, Remel Moore, Geraldine Hayes-Nelson, Andrea Perry, Kendra L. Preer, and Dewan Smith-Williams.
